GARTH: Porter Named Amerks Captain

Porter signed a 2 year contract with the Sabres in July.

I think it was smart for him to sign a 2-way contract for this season. He only played 35 games last year. Instead of being locked out right now, he has a job in the AHL and can get back/stay on track and earn a spot in the NHL in the future.

I don't understand the decision to make Porter captain.

Teams often put letters on diifferent players during the pre-season to see how they react/perfom.

Ron wanted someone who is going to be there ALL season would be my guess - Adam, Hodgson, Brennan etc... all have a chance of making the big club if and when the season starts - less so for Porter w/ Girgs, Ellis, Grigs all ahead of him on the chart.

Porter will be a fine captain IMO - he has done his time in both leagues, but is still capable of leading by example on the ice.

So does Lieuwen head to Gwinett? I hope so. I'd like to see him play against the Solar Bears.

Not sure Grigs is ahead of Porter seeing that he can't even play in the AHL this year. Can Grigs even play in the NHL for a 10 game tryout now that he is back in the Q?

I believe they can play him anywhere they want right now, actually, as the CHL transfer agreement (and restrictions in it), were part of the old CBA. Technically, there are no rules right now about where he can play.

NHL has informed clubs of NHL-CHL agreement - approved by NHLPA - allowing clubs to recall players from juniors when/if NHL lockout ends.

Bob Mckenzie reported NHL teams declared 2-3 players that they would have the right to recall from juniors when the lockout ends. Buffalo listed Grigorenko.

I also read that Patrick Roy (Grigs' coach) said in an interview that Darcy was going to talk to him at the end of October to discuss what his plans for Grigorenko are.

Grigorenko cannot play in the AHL this year. The CHL transfer agreement was renewed.
